How do I know I exist? … On Descartes

Peacock butterfly on Buddleia

How do I know I exist?

A question to be questioned

In Cartesian form;

If I am not mistaken

I ask myself

Could my belief in God

Remain unshaken?

Although it does not think –

The material world exists.

My senses tell me this

But sensory perceptions

Arrive involuntarily;

I cannot will them.

A world outside myself

External to me …

All ideas of it

A God-given propensity

To examine and understand;

I am a thinking thing

Thus I think : thus I am … .

  1. Good one. I see by the closing lines that you’re a philosopher. I’m glad you’re not “The Smelly Philosopher”.

    Hello, the bardonthehill …

    Thank you. I followed your link and the only philosopher who might justify such a description might have been Diogenes of Sinope who, at one time, lived inside a jar in Athens .. but I’m probably being very unfair to such an ascetic man. :-
