Ebb-tide ….

Low tide revealed a clam

half-buried in the sand.

A corrugated fan;

a carapace;

a broken shell

sifted by the ocean’s swell.

A relic of a life unknown

exposed to the tidal race

and to the sky

by the shifting cemetery of the sea.

I held its beauty in my hand –

and sighed;

would that my last remains,

my scoured bones, were abalone … .
