In memory ….

Sunlight on a photo frame

obscures your face from view.

In your absence sunshine fills,

as you once did, this empty space:

a farewell kiss, last fleeting smile

across a room;

last time I spoke your name:

my sister,

here are birdsongs for you …

and yellow daffodils in bloom

for Spring is here again … .

    Sometimes it feels to be an intrusion to comment on your thoughts, Marya. But I like these so much. Your opening sentence is especially marvellous.

      Hello Jamie …

      Your comments could never be an intrusion on my thoughts ; I am ever grateful for your insights and wisdom… Although grief is a deeply personal pain .. it is universally felt. It is unifying.
      Thank you for your kind thoughts about these lines .. that shaft of sunlight lives on in my memory .. the poem really wrote itself.

      My sister died in a particularly traumatic way .. writing these words somehow brings her to life.

      • JM says:

        Dear Marya, I am so sorry to hear of your sister. What a burden you carry! But I believe you have the gift and the will to turn sorrow into new life ; as the fallen seed springs to growth. x

      Thank you, Jamie, for your most kind words … I moved to Cornwall shortly afterwards .. it has proved to be both a sanctuary and an inspiration … Cornubia .. land of saints.

  2. ‘Londinenses’ are thankful to elegiac poetess, for her emotional epicedium, reminding them of Catullus 101, finding, too, a striking parallelism between your lines and those of ‘Veronensis poeta’… Londinium is partially sunny, this morning, like your poem… ‘atque in perpetuum, frāter, avē atque valē.’, ‘and for eternity, brother, a tribute and farewell.’…

    Hello Didacus …

    Thank you very much .. you are always too kind with your comments on my efforts. The poet of Verona stands alone 🙂

    It is a sunny Spring day here in Cornwall .. birdsong and daffodils Nature’s gifts to us all.

    Dear Marya

    I read your distinctly affecting poem a few days ago but the coward in me could not comment. I have been coming back to read it every day but said nothing.

    Marya, your exceptional skill to portray beauty of deep emotion in just a few words shines particularly well here.

    Hello Shermeen ….

    there is no cowardice in you, only an acute sensitivity .. thank you very much for your kind words of appreciation. That these few words resonate so deeply with you touches my heart .. I feel a private grief shared.
    Thank you for your consoling words. x

  6. Francina says:

    such a beautiful and loving tribute to your sister. May she rest in peace.

  7. atomsofstars says:

    How nice to see you, Francina …

    Thank you so much .. you are very kind. My sister herself was beautiful and loving .. I once wrote ..

    ‘ In every field with poppies
    we will see you walk;
    and high above us in those Summer skies
    we will see reflected the colour of your eyes …’
