Fieldfares …

Fieldfares flocked and feasted

in the furrows touched by the sun

and flew upward to a holly tree

suddenly, unerringly as one …

soft feathers fluttered amid berries, waxy-skinned and hard ..

survival’s prize beneath the sharp points of the leaves –

while in circles overhead

a buzzard flies.

Life in the balance

one cold winter’s day –

the fulcrum laid bare

by snow-melt and by chance for both predator and prey –

I saw the bond that binds

the hunter and the hunted

to the symmetry of fate,

in that ecstasy of choice;

the imperative of living: Life’s silent inner voice …

  1. Good morning and a good new year, to you, poetess, and to special verse ‘in the furrows touched by the sun’, in which, the seeds of corn of your poetry are steeping and the harvest will be bountiful and of high quality, next year, 2012…

This has such wonderful rhythm and catchy alliteration! And the imagery is perfect: “furrows touched by sun”

Hello Marya, in this New Leap Year. Where will it leap with us, I wonder? Thank you for your rather poignant thoughts, which remind us of perils and pleasures (dependent on the point of view) which don’t often occur to us. Or, at least, don’t often give us pause for deep thought.

Spring next! The darling buds of … er … March?

      Hello Jamie 🙂

      Perhaps to new heights 🙂

Yes, there is a poignancy here in that balance of Nature’s scales but a corresponding joy in the living of life .. that irrepressible ‘joie de vivre’ …

Yes, Spring to look forward to … I see that the buds on my camellia plant are bravely opening … a slight flash of pink amongst the green 🙂 It is named ‘Anticipation’ .. extremely fitting for its personality 🙂

    Hello again, Jane …

Thank you very much .. I’m delighted you liked that line. One winter morning two years ago I was walking just outside the village where I live and the scene played out before me … the lines almost wrote themselves when I returned home. 🙂
