Echoes …

Great granite stones

squat on the deserted shore;

abandoned deities of an atavistic cult ..

worshippers of sun and moon

and of a natural law.

The sculptress sea

has smoothed and honed their features

into grey obscurity.

But the invocations to those faceless gods

are heard for ever more

above the tumult of the wind and waves,

carried in the seagulls’ plaintive cries

and in the chiselled echoes incised in hallowed caves … .

    Hello, Marya,

    How easily we retrace the steps-in-thought of our ancestors when we get the chance to enjoy Nature undisturbed! As if we re-capitulate our collective spiritual evolution, just as the embryo re-capitulates our physical one. Your verses continually remind me of this.

    Now, with all that water, where is Narcissus? Too sad a tale? Then let’s pick daffodils without further thought! 🙂

    Hello, Jamie …

    Yes, at such times it is possible to see with other eyes, so to speak …and sense the spirit of the past . Awe and wonder ever present in mankind ..

    Ah, yes .. a sad allusion …. but Spring will be their memorial ..
