A boat named Dido …

A boat named Dido waits ashore

for a nameless wanderer;

Winters pass into Spring and Summers die to Autumn ..

above the high-tide line

winds scour the brightly-painted hull

season after season

but Dido, forlornly fading with the sun, still looks out to sea:

her company a resting gull

and vestiges of antique memories

to set sail upon … .

    Is this the same Dido – Elissa – who twice found (and lost) love, Marya? I must read the story when time allows. But this little boat, who stirred your thoughts, has a different destiny, I feel. She will ride forth to peace, plaice and plenty! And delicious pilchards, too,I shouldn’t be surprised.

    You must go back and check on her – and then write some more for us. 🙂

    Indeed Jamie … the very same … unlucky in love but immortalised by Virgil.

    I like to imagine a different scenario in which Dido wished Aeneas a safe journey to his destiny … but then .. no drama .. no immortality ….

    She is a beautiful little boat … one day she’ll set sail on an adventure … 🙂
