The setting sun …

SETTING SUN RUAN LANIHORNE

On the edge of darkness

as the first faint star appears

beyond the flush of the horizon,

lies a world of dreams and fears.

Let not that melancholy veil

shroud the promise of the day;

let me not fear the moonless night;

let not my hopes and spirit quail.

Bring the streams of broken cloud

forward to the edge of light;

let not my cowardice prevail.

As the resplendent colours fade

let me see beauty in this vision;

let me not be afraid.

As the lightless moon ascends

let me remember that the sun

shines like love

beyond the darkness that descends ..

Remove the blindfold; let me see

where those fears and dreams were made:

embolden me … .

    With your permission I would like to show this to a Prison Chaplain where I work. It is very much like a prayer and I can imagine women reciting or reading this. It is a comforter. It is lovely. You tap a rich seam of language!

    Good morning, Marya.

    When we’re in a certain mood, the setting of the sun can be un-nerving, can’t it? we feel a terrible loss, as if the motions of the stars and the world might cease twixt sleep and rising. But always there is hope – an echo of certainty – for when did the Creator ever disappoint us in such matters? Do we deserve such faithfullness? 🙂

    Good morning, Jamie ..

    Yes, indeed it can … but the sun always rises no matter how long the night 🙂

    One thinks of these things; muddled yet distinct and aspirational ideas, one thinks and absorbs them but can do nothing more… but atom has the amazing ability to put the ideas and thoughts in living, breathing, expressive words.

    Another beautiful poem! This morning reading some of your poems has been an experience emanating a surfeit of beauty 🙂
