Inner space …

I journeyed in the spacecraft

of my mind

out beyond the galaxies

beyond the realms of time.

I watched the blue earth turning

like a flower,

and saw her close her eyes,

like petals,

when the night’s hour was come-

sleeping like a child

in a universe of trust.

And I wondered why at morning

the dream had turned to dust

and the waking world was savage

and the sweet earth wild.

I voyaged past the silvered moon

and out beyond all stars.

I saw no stellar diadems

crowned with ice or fire-

I sailed upon the ark of sleep

beyond the sons of suns.

I dreamed of the timelessness of time

and the continuum-

and of the spark that lit the darkness

in the depths beyond the deep

and kept a lonely vigil in that eternal place

where no stars breathed his name.

But when I woke to morning

and the risen sun,

I thought I glimpsed the holder of that flame-
