Where? …

Where is that child

who thought that starfish

fell from the night sky?

Where is that child

who sought the rainbow’s end

without success

and wondered why?

The child who knew

that toadstools were the seats of elves

and saw them sitting there,

with acorn caps awry?

The child who trod so softly near

small hollows in the ground,

those elfin beds

of tiny-flowered moss,

in case a sleeping pixie might be found.

That child is where imagination flies

on shimmering wings –

and the days are long.

That child was me, aged five,

before I could tell the time

or sing of life’s short song … .
