Seaweed …

As I walked barefoot
along the wind-swept shore
amid seaweed drying
in sinuous strands
draped on pebble,
stone and sand –
exposed by the neglectful tide
to a raw element, the air,
like ribbons stolen
from a mermaid’s hair
by some amphibious thief ;
I thought I heard her lament her loss
with soft sounds of grief
in the lingering sea sighing … .
